Why do teenage gay males think they have to act like Jack from Will and Grace?

First off I am gay. Next, I chose not to act stereotypical. I HAVE been harassed for not acting stereotypical. I do not want to wear hot pants but my schools GSA is says ';Act stereotypical or your not gay.'; That is also what the media says. I know many LGBT adults would agree with my on this but no so much teenagers. They think they have to act stereotypical and I just want to know why.Why do teenage gay males think they have to act like Jack from Will and Grace?

A lot of guys who aren't yet old enough to qualify as worldly only know about homosexuality from observing the stereotype. Like most people, they only recognize really flamboyant guys as being gay. They don't realize that most gays look and act just like everyone else, so as part of establishing their identities, they mimic what's familiar to them. Annoying? Yes. But the guys I've known who went through the phase were finished with it by the time they were in their 20s. At that point, they reverted to acting like their normal selves, rather than caricatures of gays.
I think that most teenage males gay and str8 alike act like a stereotypical because the media has infused it into their minds that there is only one way and that way is that either if you're str8 than you will act macho, rugged and tough and if you're gay then you will act efiminate, flirty and sassy, but in all reality that's not life at all. I for one as a gay adult male act average and don't try to be like anyone else. my ex-bf is more macho than I am but he doesn't like sports but yet I do so there is no right or wrong way to be except to be yourself for you and not for anyone else. The only time I ever act stereotypical is when I'm deliberately trying to mock the whole ';camp gay'; image.





Really, though, I'm not like that at all. While I do have some traits that you might consider stereotypically gay, they're mostly just artifacts of my overall personality. I don't consider myself feminine, really.
Teenagers don't always understand subtly. They also don't understand that there is a difference between being in the closet and not acting stereotypical. People like to say they can pick out gay people, but they can usually only pick out the butch lesbians and effeminate boys.

maybe they want to let ppl know how many gay ppl there are, to encourage them to come out. or, they are acting as role models for ppl who would like to 'act like Jack', but are too afraid to cuz they would be so alone. or maybe that's just how they are (thats their personality)
if they are fans of Will and Grace then they should know that the main character on the show played by Erick McCormack is also gay but is NOT the stereotypical flashy gay that Jack is. Next time they think you should ';act'; stereotypical...point that out to them!
They probably think that they have to conform to a stereotype.


You're are probably talking about young males, when they grow up they'll start to understand that you don't have to conform to a certain stereotype to be gay.
I've never seen Will and Grace... I don't act stereotypical nor wear tight pants either because I find tight pants to be very uncomfortable..
I don't watch will and grace! Also I think one should act how one feels :) Some ppl do legitimately like being camp or however you would describe it. I'm not camp, not macho, just bland -.-
